This marked the third consecutive year that I’ve been able to hunt whitetails on the Mayfield Ranch near Comstock Texas. This is a fun hunt that I do with some close friends and business associates. This hunt typically produces some nice bucks but bucks over 150 are not very common.

This year the ranch was hit with a severe drought, less than 2 inches of rain all year. Fortunately they had been feeding protein for most of the year. For a guy that’s use to hunting whitetails in hardwoods and over food plots in the Midwest this is quite a change. The ground is covered with rocks and the only vegetation seems to be throne bushes and cactus. It’s hard to imagine that any deer could survive here let alone flourish, but they do.

The quality of the bucks was down due to the drought, but I was able to harvest a couple nice bucks, one 11 pointer and a 9 pointer.

Overall I’ve had a great 2011. In addition to my two Texas bucks I shot a great 7x7 Montana mule deer, a 14 point whitetail on my Missouri farm, a 12 point whitetail in Illinois, a New Mexico Antelope that green scored 82 and several other whitetails that I harvested with my bow on my farm. I had unsuccessful whitetail hunts in Kansas and Iowa but I still had a great time.

Good luck to everyone in 2012!
