I
wasn't sure what to expect for the opening day of Spring Turkey season in Missouri.
I knew the weather was going to make a change for the better after a couple
of weeks in which winter refused to realease it's grip. I spent Sunday (the
day before opening day) brushing in my blind and making sure I was ready to
go for the following morning. Sunday evening, I hopped in my blind a 4:00 p.m.
armed with my favorite turkey calls and my digital camera.......
It
was breezy morning, Saturday, April 21st. I wanted to be in the stand before
daylight, but, I left the house at 5:30am and it was already getting light.
I rushed to the Point stand threw up my decoys and got settled in for my first
day spring turkey hunting. I was concerned about the wind, but when I heard
a gobble off in the distance, nothing else mattered.

It promised to
be a good weekend for rifle season based on the trail cam pictures and buck
sighting during the bow season. Do to hunting pressure in my usual hunting
area, I made the decision to make the trek over to a newer piece of property
on our family farm. With the exception of the prior youth season, the property
had not been hunted for deer in close to 4 years.

Twas
the night before rifle season. I loaded all my gear into my F250 and headed
north to our property for some much need time in the condo blind. The condo
blind is a 10 x 10 cabin on stilts. It is equipped with a loveseat, heater,
and urinal, roughing iit as one might say. Back to the story, I was making good
time, had the cruise set on 70 and images of large whitetails running through
my head, when suddenly my wife starts screaming "deer, deer, deer"
and then boom. Yes, I landed my first whitetail of the season with the right
front corner of my truck. The damage was minimal but my pride was hurt. Now
for the hunting story.........

November
10th 2007 marked the opening day of rifle season for deer in the
state of Missouri. There had been
numerous sightings of some nice racks. The trail cameras produced some great
photos of a few trophy class monsters. This was the 4th year since the State
of Missouri implemented antler restriction in Gasconade County and the 6th
year since we began planting food plots of wildlife. The results of are hard
work and the antler restrictions were becoming very apparent.
There
is always a wonder in your mind, when the day will come when I will see a very
nice buck. This had to be my year, during bow hunters weekend that was all I
seen but nothing really in shooting range. On Nov. 16 Joe invited Matt, Mark
and I up to his place in Clark County.
